Wicked Bad
I was working in Boston at this fashionable boutique on Newbury Street–like the Rodeo Drive of Boston–and on my lunch break wanted to get a coffee. I took one step onto the icy road and fell on my side between two parked cars and near a bunch of moving cars going down the street. I got up soaking wet, cold, dirty and my shoes were full of water and ice. Not sure if I had injured myself, I immediately went back into the boutique and told my manager that I’d be going home. She asked me why and when I explained what had just happened she requested that I finish my shift! Needless to say I went home and then quit shortly thereafter. It was a terrible hourly job and they treated all of their employees like slaves no matter if they just had a spill like me or were having a great sales day.
The manager doesn’t sound unreasonable, to me. Were it me, and an employee decided to bail for the day just because they fell in a puddle during lunch, I’d think, “yeesh, what a baby!”
It seems like you’re overreacting. I probably would have allowed you to go change, but I would have expected you to return and finish the day.
I agree. If you thought you were injured enough to not be able to work, you go to the hospital, or urgent care, and get a doctors note. That, and you never TELL you boss you are going home, you explain the situation and then REQUEST it. You’re lucky you didn’t get fired on the spot.
What’s Rodeo Drive like? Is that kind of the Newbury Street of LA?
OP, do you honestly think it’s reasonable to skip out on the rest of a work day because you fell down and got wet? Unless you’re injured to the point of needing a hospital or, at the very least, an ace bandage and a pack of ice, then you can manage to finish your shift.
